The Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing with “Music of the Spheres” at the Victory Theatre on Saturday, March 16 at 7 p.m.
The concert opens with “Music of the Spheres” by Josef Strauss followed by Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” (Moonlight). Jim Beckel’s “From The Earth To The Moon and Beyond,” commissioned by the Evansville Philharmonic and several other orchestras to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing, will be narrated by Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. The piece represents the creation of earth in the beginning and chronicles man’s journey from his beginning on earth to the moon, then celebrates the many accomplishments that we have had in our NASA program since the moon landing in 1969. A video will accompany this work featuring images from the Hubble Telescope.
Gustav Holst’s intergalactic masterpiece, The Planets will be performed in the second half of the concert. Each movement takes its title from a planet; beginning with “Mars the Bringer of War” and ending with “Neptune the Mystic.” The Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will make its Classics debut performance on stage with the Orchestra during this piece.
